| The Inaugural “Rona Harrold Award for Excellence in Handwork” | | 01-02-10 | | | Sophia Franken was Awarded the very first – Rona Harrold Award for Excellence in Hand Work 2009
Early in 2009, Cheryl Andrews from the Geelong Patchwork & Quilters Guild, Exhibition Committee contacted us to find out if we would mind if the Exhibition Committee named one of their awards in honor of Rona. Rhonda and I were more than happy with Geelong’s request and therefore we backed their decision by sponsoring the award through Blue Willow. Hence the “Rona Harrold Award for Excellence in Hand Work” was formed.
Rhonda and I headed out to the presentations on the events opening night in November 09. As we admired and discussed the amazing ability and talent of the quilts on display we came upon a Baltimore Quilt that was all needle turn appliquéd, hand quilted and very familiar to us, as it was made by a past student of ours who took part in our Baltimore Club taught by Rona. Rhonda and I found ourselves proud and voted for the Baltimore Quilt as our “Viewers Choice” Quilt.
As we took our seats for all the formalities of the night, Cheryl took to the podium to announce the winners of the night. Sophia Franken who made the Baltimore Quilt was the winner of the “Rona Harrold Award for Excellence in Hand Work” voted by guest judge Faye Cunningham.
Rhonda and I were ecstatic and thought how appropriate, keeping in mind that the judge had no idea of the connection of Sophia and us.
Congratulations and best wishes go out to Sophia – Well Done!!!
